Too Much Weight on the Back

Being overweight puts you at risk for developing health problems, including back pain. The human frame is designed to carry a specific amount of weight, any excess weight, whether muscle or fat, places more pressure on the bones and joints. When there is excessive abdominal fat, it causes the pelvis to tilt forward, moving out of its normal position/alignment. As the pelvis tilts forward, to compensate, your torso will tilt backward. This abnormal postural position will result in overstretching of the soft tissues (e.g., ligaments, muscles, and tendons) of the lower back and pelvis. Hence, this is why lower back pain is often seen in pregnant women, especially during the 3rd trimester.

The Spine is Not Centered

When the spine is not centered over the pelvis it results in an abnormal postural position. If your posture is not corrected or improved, it can result in the breakdown of the tissue structures, such as the bones (commonly seen in spinal degeneration, osteoarthritis) as well as the spinal disc (often referred to as degenerative disc disease). Degeneration of the spine takes time, and most people are asymptomatic; therefore, are not aware their spine is breaking down until they have an x-ray of their spine.

Bottom Line: If you walk consistently for an extended period, chances are you may lose weight. The body frame can only handle so much weight, anytime we are carrying excessive weight, especially body fat, it puts excessive strain on the bones and joints.
