Do Chiropractors Really Think That?!?

Chiropractic care is a form of health care that helps to restore, maintain, and/or improve health through spinal adjustments. Chiropractic is one of the few healthcare segments that consists of philosophy, science, and art. In this post, I will discuss briefly the philosophy of chiropractic.

In short, chiropractic focuses on the knowing fact that the body has an innate ability to heal and maintain itself. When there is no interference between the nervous system and the rest of the body, the body is able to function at its optimal capacity. If there is disruption or interference in the communication between the nervous system and the rest of the body, it is manifested by dis-ease or abnormal functioning of body systems that present as signs and/or symptoms.

There are 33 chiropractic principles that were developed by B.J. Palmer. In addition, to the science and art of chiropractic, the philosophy of chiropractic serves as a guiding principle or a moral compass in which the doctor of chiropractic may practice. The 33 Chiropractic Principles expand on the natural ability of the body to heal itself, the way in which chiropractors serve to provide assistance in improving mobility through adjustment, and more. Since the best doctor is a doctor who not only understands and respects the organism’s body (e.g., humans and animals), she/he has the respect of the patient (e.g., human or animal) in which serves to provide evidence-based chiropractic care in a safe environment that would yield the highest patient outcomes.

The philosophy of chiropractic is one of the main reasons that make chiropractic a unique form of healthcare because it:

  1. Chiropractic care relies on the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
  2. Chiropractic care does not utilize drugs or surgical procedures to treat neuromusculoskeletal conditions.
  3. Chiropractors know that how we heal is important. In other words, most of us heal from soft tissue injuries, however, how we heal can determine our function.
  4. Chiropractors use spinal adjustments, which is an outside passive force (e.g., energy) applied to the patient spine (and/or extremity joints) to help improve joint mobility.
