Chiropractic Adjustment…Back Pain Relief, Now

Chiropractic care relies on the body’s innate ability to heal itself. Chiropractic care does not utilize drugs, medication, or surgical procedures. Chiropractic care is considered a safe form of treatment for muscle and joint conditions, as is often a first choice treatment by those who sustained whiplash injuries, muscle strains (e.g., neck pain, back pain), and disc-relation conditions such as sciatica.

The chiropractic adjustment is a specific maneuver applied to the patient’s spinal joints using the chiropractor’s hand (or chiropractic instrument). The sound that is often heard and/or felt by patients is gas being released from the joints. Our bodies undergo normal biochemical processes, and a by-product of these normal processes is the build-up of gas within the joint capsules. When the joint capsules are stretched, a “popping” sound or “cracking” sound is often heard or felt by the patient.

Chiropractors do NOT crack bones. A fracture is defined as a broken bone, and can be viewed as a “cracked bone.” I repeat, chiropractors do not crack bones. Chiropractors perform specifcic passive movements to the joints of the spine and/or other joints of the body (e.g., shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, hip, knee, and ankle/foot) to improve joint mobility and restore normal joint function. As we say in chiropractic, “Eggs crack, chiropractors adjust.” With that being said, you cannot perform a chiropractic adjustment on yourself. Although you may experience sounds when performing normal movements, it is not a chiropractic adjustment.
