3 Reasons Why Patient Education is Important

By: Dr. Tiffany T. Butler | March 29, 2023 | Read Time: 7 minutes

As a healthcare provider, it is important to educate patients on how to manage their health, independently of me. Most people will seek the help of a healthcare professional may include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • They have reached their education level in understanding their condition.
  • The self-care treatments they have used have not solved their condition.
  • Their condition is not improving.
  • Their condition is worsening.

Therefore, the healthcare provider acts as an educator. Providing the patient with information on their condition, regarding the cause and available treatment options, allows the patient to make a health decision that will best fit their health care needs and goals.

#1: As You Teach You Learn

Every patient encounter is an opportunity to teach them something. In addition, healhtcare providres have the same opportunity to learn more about the patient. By learning more about the patient (wants, needs, and desires) with each visit, the healthcare provider is able to provide better services to fulfil those needs. The best thing a healthcare provider can do is to provide evidence-based treatment and education.  Give something to patients – help tips, home care instructions, etc.

#2: Your Provide Better Patient Service

If you are doing a great job as a practitioner, the patient will need you less. As you assist patients in their healing journey, education should be a part of it. Millions of people suffer from chronic pain on a daily basis. By empowering patients on how to take care of their conditions, they not only have the education and tools to help themselves, but they also become empowered to help others. Add value to patients by going the extra mile, trust me, it matters.

#3: Patients Learn More About Your Profession or Area of Expertise

Chiropractic care is not as widespread, as we chiropractors would like it to be. This is largely due to the lack of awareness of what chirorpactic care is; what conditions it helps. Chiropractic is often confused to be physical therapist, massage, therapist, etc. Therefore, educaitn patient on the numerous benefits of chiropractic care besides alleviatign pain, will open their understanding of what chiropracti care is and how it can help them with other issues, such balance and coordination issues. Moreover, the patient gets the know more about the doctor and their specific area of expertise. For example, alot of people are unaware that they can see a chiropractor if they have been involved in an motor vehicle accident; or when they suffer a work-related injury (e.g., have a workers’ compensation claim).
