When To Use Heat for Pain-Relief?

The general rule of thumb for treating a soft tissue injury such as a muscle strain or ligament sprain is rest, ice, compress, (and elevation, if an extremity, like a shoulder, knee, ankle, etc.) for the first 72 hours after an injury. Resting for a few days after an injury will not only reduce your chances of making your injury worse, and also allows your body to start recovering from the injury by removing unnecessary stressors. However, at some point during your recovery, the use of heat may be more beneficial, depending on what phase of healing you are in. It’s considered appropriate to use heat therapy during the sub-acute and chronic phases of healing.

As your body heals from a soft tissue injury, the use of heat therapy will not only help to relieve muscle tension, but it will also aid in the healing process. Once swelling and inflammation have reduced in the area, you can start to apply heat to the area. If you are still experiencing swelling and inflammation, then applying an ice pack to the area for 15 minutes first, followed by 15 – 20 minutes of heat therapy application could provide additional relief.

Below are a few benefits of heat therapy application. Click on the links to read more.

Heat Therapy Application should be used with precautions when using a heating pad at home and follow the instructions on the product to avoid skin irritation or burn. Never fall asleep with a heating pad. Patients who have sensory deficits (e.g., can’t tell when something is too hot or too cold) should be aware of the risks and benefits of heat therapy use.
