Don’t slouch.” “Sit up straight.” “If you keep sitting like that, you are going to have bad posture.” You’ve probably heard such phrases from your parents or other adults growing up. What is bad posture? What is good posture? In this article, I will discuss the main reasons why being aware of your posture is not only good for your spine it is also good for your health.

What is posture?

Posture can be defined as your body’s position in space. Posture can be observed while in a static position (such as sitting or standing) or a dynamic position (when you are moving or performing tasks such as lifting).

Posture can be used to indicate your status of your neuromusculoskeletal health.

Having a stooped or slouched posture can be indicative of pain, muscle weakness, and/or muscle imbalance. Most people of unaware of their posture, until it is observed and brought to their attention by someone else. For example, a person who has recently injured their lumbar spine (low back) may lean away from pain. If it hurts to stand up straight, the person may learn forward because it relieves the pain.

Here’s why good posture matters and why you should get your posture checked.

Having good posture means that your body is strong enough to stand the forces of gravity, whether your body is static position or performing movements. Good posture requires balance, coordination, muscle balance, and strength, as well as joint flexibility. When you have good posture, your body uses less energy, and there is less mechanical stress on your body.

When should I see a healthcare provider about my posture?

You should consult a healthcare provider about your posture if you have one or more of the following:

  • Recently injured your spine
  • Feel off-balance or unstable
  • Have difficulty walking or standing
  • Need to use a walking assistance device such as a cane or walker
  • Experience pain when standing, sitting, or changing body positions
  • Feel clumsy, lose your balance easily, or trip over things

Chiropractic care may help you improve your posture.

Chiropractic care is a form of healthcare that helps to restore, maintain, and improve an individual’s health through spinal adjustments. Chiropractors focus on the interrelationships between the nervous, muscle, and skeletal systems, and how they work together and influence each other. Using spinal adjustments, along with therapeutic exercises and ergonomics tips, a chiropractor may help you improve your posture, reduce pain related to poor posture, and restore muscle balance. Many people seek chiropractic care to improve their posture. Chiropractors oftentimes will use posture analyzing software for a better assessment of your posture.
