It is estimated that more than 100, 000 auto accidents occur every year in the State of Maryland. While a small percentage of auto accidents result in fatalities, auto accidents cause injuries to the hard and soft structures of the neck. Neck pain is one of the top injuries from auto accidents, and is commonly referred to as “whiplash.” Whiplash is when the cervical spine (or neck) goes into hyperextension and hyperflexion, like a whip. The whipping action of the neck results in damage to the neck, due to the violent forces to the neck. Most whiplash injuries occur from a rear-end collision but can also occur in a front-end collision, creating similar forces to the neck.

Neck Pain from Auto Accident

The neck pain that is experienced after an auto accident is due to damages to the structures of the spine, including but not limited to: the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves, and/or spinal discs. When there is an injury to one or more of the above structures of the spine, the body begins to go through the various phases of soft tissue healing and repair. If an auto accident victim has whiplash, the injured person typically will experience pain with touch; pain with movement of the neck; neck muscle tightness, and spasms.

Chiropractic Care for Neck Injury and Pain from Auto Accident

Anytime a person is involved in an auto accident they should seek medical attention. While some injuries may be obvious, other injuries are not as visible such as internal bleeding. Therefore, an initial evaluation of the person’s injury following an auto accident is often necessary to rule out any serious injuries and to determine if further treatment is warranted including but not limited to medical care (e.g. prescriptions and/or over-counter medications), post-injury therapy, and/or chiropractic care.

Chiropractic care specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of soft tissue injuries such as whiplash injuries, muscle strains, ligament sprains, disc problems (e.g. herniations, bulges), and more.
