The creation of the Living Through Pain blog was inspired by the thousands of patients I’ve treated for various pain conditions. What I have discovered in clinical practice is patients with chronic pain conditions often understand that the pain may never go away, however, they want to find ways to live with the pain.
Pain is complex and chronic pain conditions can be challenging to manage, depending on numerous factors. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 nearly 20% of adults suffer from chronic pain. Chronic pain is defined as pain that is long-standing for 3 months or greater and/or that is reoccurring.
There are many things that cause chronic pain, such as:
- Arthritis
- Cancer
- Nerve Pain
- Poor Posture
- Being Overweight
- Occupational Activities (e.g. repetitive overuse injuries)
- Untreated Injuries
Some patients have found ways to manage chronic pain through medications, exercise, dietary changes, and other lifestyle changes, while others continue to struggle. In this blog, Living Through Pain, my goal is to educate, support, and inspire those who are dealing with chronic pain conditions to find joy in their lives.
Education
Education is paramount to living a healthy lifestyle, even if you are dealing with a chronic pain condition. Patients can increase their knowledge and understanding of a chronic pain condition by reading books on the topics, articles, blogs, and peer-reviewed journals; listening to podcasts and interviews with experts; watching videos and television shows that promote a healthy lifestyle. The more educated a patient is about their pain condition(s), the easier it becomes to manage it.
Support
Patients with chronic pain conditions should stay in communication with all of their healthcare providers to ensure they have support all around. Since chronic pain can impact all areas of health and life, patients are encouraged to seek the health of not only their medical physicians but mental therapy professionals as well. In addition, patients can contact their local health department for resources. While some patients may feel ashamed of the diagnosis of certain health conditions, shame can prevent getting help to properly treat and manage health conditions.
Inspiration
If you are dealing with chronic pain, know that you are not the only one. There are millions of people just like you who are combating pain daily. While pain is common among humans, suffering doesn’t have to be. Find health groups with people for your specific health condition(s), many groups are free to join, while others may ask for a small fee. By participating in a support group, you can share your experience and learn from others, as well as meet new people.
