Back Pain When You Stand? Do this for relief.

For some people, walking causes an increase in back pain; whereas others experience relief when performing movements such as walking. If you find it hard to stand or walk for 5 minutes without experiencing back pain, then try riding a stationary bike, swimming, or water aerobics. Low-impact exercises place less stress on the joints, thus allowing you to perform exercises with less pain.

Who Should Perform Low-Impact Exercises?

If you experience one or more of the following, then you should perform low-impact exercises:

  • You exercise every now and then (inconsistent with physical activity)
  • You are over 50 years old.
  • You have a history of back surgery.
  • You have a history of hip, knee, or ankle/foot surgery
  • You have a history of chronic back pain
  • You cannot walk for 5 minutes without experiencing back pain.
  • You cannot stand for 5 minutes without experiencing back pain.
  • You cannot sit for 5 minutes without experiencing back pain.
  • You have a new back injury
  • You were recently involved in a motor vehicle collision that caused back pain.

Stay Active with Low-Impact Exercises

Performing low-impact exercises will allow you to continue to stay active. Most people, when they are experiencing pain, will cease to participate in any form of physical activity. Resting, although it is helpful in the early stage of healing, can cause a delay in healing if you do not incorporate exercise and/or stretching after a back injury.

What Are Low-Impact Exercises?

Low-impact exercises are activities that do not overexert the heart and lungs; in addition, it places little impact on the bones and joints. Low-impact exercises (e.g., walking, swimming) can be performed for an extended period, compared to high-impact exercises (e.g., running, jumping), which place more physical demands on the body.

  • Swimming
  • Hiking
  • Cycling
  • Water aerobics
  • Yoga
  • Pilates
